Shopify Is Retiring Script Tags: Awin Tracking Migration Guide for 2026–2027

Shopify is phasing out Storefront Script Tags, and Awin users need to migrate their tracking setup before March 1, 2027. Here’s what is changing, why it matters, and how to protect affiliate attribution and reporting.

What happened

Shopify is changing how apps add tracking and other functionality to storefronts. Since October 1, 2026, Shopify apps can no longer create new Storefront Script Tags or update existing ones. Existing Script Tags can continue to run for now, but Shopify plans to stop loading them in storefronts completely on March 1, 2027.

This matters for affiliate marketers because parts of the previous Awin Shopify integration relied on Script Tags for important tracking functions. Shopify is moving app integrations toward newer systems such as Theme App Extensions and App Embed Blocks, giving merchants more visibility and control over what runs inside their storefront.

Awin has responded by updating its Shopify app. From version 5.5.0 onward, the app includes the new Awin Tracking App Embed, which is designed to replace functionality that previously depended on Storefront Script Tags.

Why it matters

For affiliate programs, this is more than a routine Shopify update. Tracking is what connects an affiliate click to a conversion, a commission and ultimately a payout. If that tracking breaks, advertisers can lose visibility into sales and affiliates may lose credit for revenue they helped generate.

Awin says that without the migration, functions including server-to-server tracking, partner plugins and reporting may be affected after March 1, 2027. That creates a real risk for brands that assume their current Shopify setup will continue working automatically.

The change also highlights a broader shift across affiliate marketing: tracking infrastructure is becoming more dependent on platform updates, privacy rules, consent frameworks and checkout architecture. Advertisers that regularly review their integrations will be better positioned to protect attribution accuracy and partner trust.

What affiliates should know

The most important takeaway: if your Shopify store uses Awin, the migration should be treated as a priority rather than something to revisit in 2027.

If you installed the Awin Shopify App before October 1, 2026, update it to the latest version and enable the Awin Tracking App Embed in your published Shopify theme. If you installed the app on or after October 1, 2026, the App Embed still needs to be enabled for the tracking setup to be complete.

There is one detail that is easy to miss: App Embeds are activated at theme level. If you publish a new Shopify theme later, you should check the active theme again to make sure the Awin Tracking App Embed is still enabled.

Key dates

  • October 1, 2026: Shopify apps can no longer create or update Storefront Script Tags.
  • March 1, 2027: Shopify stops loading Storefront Script Tags entirely.

Why this deserves attention now

Affiliate tracking is one of those systems that often gets noticed only when it stops working. By then, missing conversions, incomplete reports and attribution gaps may already have affected both advertisers and partners.

For Shopify merchants using Awin, migrating early is the safer move. Updating the app and enabling the Tracking App Embed now gives teams time to verify conversion tracking, confirm reporting accuracy and fix any issues before the old Script Tag system disappears.

Bottom line: the Shopify Script Tag shutdown is not just a developer change. It is an affiliate tracking deadline. Brands that prepare early can protect attribution, preserve reliable reporting and avoid unnecessary disruption to their affiliate program in 2027.
